The Ferrari 328 GTS/GTB succeeded the Ferrari 308 GTS, inheriting much of its mechanical foundation while introducing significant alterations to the body, chassis, and engine. Apart from cosmetic revisions, it incorporated the latest iteration of the transversely mid-mounted Ferrari Dino engine, featuring an increased displacement of 3.2 liters. This enhanced engine configuration delivered a boosted output of 270 horsepower and 231 lb-ft (313 N⋅m) of torque, enabling the 328 GTS to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Coupled with the engine was a gated five-speed manual transmission featuring a newly introduced hydraulically-operated clutch system.In the case of the GTS variant, Ferrari transformed the fixed hardtop of the GTB into a detachable hardtop, with a fully retractable soft-top convertible also developed as a prototype. Towards the latter part of the 1988 model year, Ferrari implemented a significant mechanical update to the 328, incorporating an anti-lock braking system (ABS). This update necessitated a redesign of the suspension geometry and the replacement of the original concave wheels with convex ones. Additionally, small Cavallino Rampante (prancing horse) emblems were affixed to the side view door mirrors. Standardizing ABS across all 1989 production models marked the final model year for the 328 series.
