National differences in motorcycle buying habits are strange. In Europe, for example, naked bikes, i.e. bikes with no fairing or bodywork, are immensely popular. The relatively short distances between towns or cities, not to mention the impressive public transport network, negates the imperative for good wind protection, most bikes being used in and around town anyway.

But here in SA, we look at a motorcycle as not so much a means of cheap transport, but as a luxury item to be used on high days and holidays. And as that means long distances, then wind protection is important. However, this view can lead to some amazing motorcycles being overlooked and the Yamaha MT-09 is one such.

It is a naked bike, yes, but with such an impressive list of attributes that to ignore it is to miss out on one of motorcycling’s treats. With a punchy, turbine smooth triple-cylinder engine and great chassis, coupled with flawless ergonomics and riding excitement way beyond its price tag, we ignore this bike at our peril.

It’s that perfect mix of practicality and performance that makes the urban commute so satisfying while offering up levels of dynamic performance that can make a weekend blast so much fun. Sure, the lack of wind protection might mitigate against a trip from Johannesburg to Durban but, in reality, how often does one do that anyway? Not enough, in our book, to not give this bike a thorough second glance.
