Kawasaki goes back to the future with new retro bike

Going retro has become a bit of a fashion thing, but here and there it has brought about some really nice bikes. Kawasaki’s Z900 RS is such a case.

Kawasaki says the Z900 RS was conceived as a homage to their legendary Z1. Following Honda’s CB750 of 1968, the 900cc Z1 was introduced in 1971 and, with the Honda, established the “superbike” class. At its time the Z1 had the most powerful four-stroke four-cylinder motorcycle engine from Japan ever, delivering 81hp (60,4kW).

The new Z900 RS is powered by the 948cc engine from the Z900 naked sports bike, but the engine has been reprofiled for less of a peaky power delivery to a more even torque spread over lower engine speeds, making it more rideable.

So the styling is retro, but the powertrain is totally up-to-date. Kawasaki says this engine choice makes the Z900RS unique in this category: “The newest Z is a synthesis of the traditional and the modern. An engine with a traditional in-line four configuration, and is backed by Kawasaki’s latest rider support technology, the engine and frame design both benefit from the latest in advanced analysis technology, and carefully crafted styling elements are complemented by high-tech features like LED lighting and digital instrumentation.”

Kawasaki says great pains were taken to achieve the Z900 RS’s look-and-feel, with each component meticulously selected and every setting carefully considered. The smooth response of an in-line four tuned for low-mid range torque, a deep rumbling exhaust note crafted to deliver additional rider enjoyment, and neutral handling that enables both leisurely and sporty riding. This is complemented by timeless looks that blend Z1-inspired styling with modern technology and craftsmanship techniques, and an attention to detail and high level of fit-and-finish to rival that of the Z1 itself.

For riders searching for a bike with character and a rich history, the Z900RS offers both in abundance, while providing an opportunity to slow down, look around and enjoy the simple things that life can bring, says Kawasaki.

The Z900 RS is available in three variants: the Z900 RS in black, the Z900 RS SE in orange and the Z900 RS Café in green. As can be gathered from the name, the Café is styled like a café racer.

Personally I like the look of the bike and can’t wait to test it.
