BMW Motorad novice rider training

Author - Author

BMW South Africa’s motorcycle division, Motorad, invited us to experience their novice rider training program. We duly arrived at their academy at Zwartkops raceway to begin our foray on two wheels.
The full day course offers a complete introduction to motorcycles and introduces novice riders to the concepts of physics of riding, safety, the machinery we would be using as well as a few hours of riding time around various areas at Zwartkops. During the theory sessions we covered beginner rider knowledge of motorcycle controls, body positioning, road positioning and obstacle avoidance after which we headed outside and were run through a number of novice rider drills that involved clutch control, weight control and changing gears. Another theory session followed were we covered the handling aspects of motorcycles and then it was back outside to put into practice what we had learned with braking exercises and slamming through the cones and this was all followed by a small outride around Zwartkops.
Anyone is welcome to do the course as long as they can ride a bicycle. After a full day of training everyone is issued with a certificate of completion and will be able to ride a motorcycle safely and with confidence.
