More about Porsche

911’s and 944’s were the cars dreams would surround. Posters on the wall would have one picturing themselves driving around a mountain drive with the top down, sunglasses on, the sun shining above and the wind in your hair. Porsche vehicles have long been at the forefront of automotive engineering and technology. They are renowned for high performance and exceptional handling. This is due to the fact that they were developed on a sports car racing circuit. The company was founded by Bohemian born Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. He studied mechanical engineering in Vienna and then moved to Stuttgart, Germany in 1923. Highly ambitious, he began his own engineering and design company by 1930. The company grew a good reputation for innovative vehicles which lead to Adolf Hitler, after coming into power, summoning for Dr. Porsche to meet with him. Hitler requested Porsche to find solutions to the technical difficulties hindering production of the Volkswagen. In 1935, Porsche designed and revealed his special sports version which was rejected by the Nazi regime. Hitler himself later approved a contract for Porsche to develop a car for the 1939 Auto-Union Grand Prix from Berlin to Rome. The race was then cancelled and production of Porsche’s car was then put to a halt as World War II began. Dr. Porsche was known to have given information to Hitler on several occasions regarding the production of German military equipment and how to increase it. Porsche ended up being imprisoned for a short period for his association with Hitler and the Nazi regime. After the war, the company was then moved to Gmund in Kärnten, Austria. It was Ferdinand Porsche's son, Ferry Porsche, Jr. who then began research into the market for expensive, handmade, high performance sports cars. His project was then funded by Swiss financiers and began from reworking the Volkswagen Beetle. The first prototype then reached the roads by 1948. They began producing five handmade cars a month. A master craftsman hand-beat each aluminium body for hours. By 1948, an agreement was signed with Volkswagen to make use of their services throughout Austria and Germany. Some time later the Porsche company was then moved back to Stuttgart and made use of the Zuffenhausen factory. The factory was previously being used by the American occupation forces. It provided the much needed space and ability for better volume manufacturing. The company grew day by day to having 200 workmen hammering out sports cars. These cars were bought by film stars, radio stars as well as other businessmen. Ferdinand Porsche passed on in 1951 but not before seeing how his efforts and vision were beginning to take off.
