Hello there,
The engine found in the 316i is the BMW N13 engine. This engine is fairly reliable but the problems associated with this engine are mostly around seals and some components surrounding the engine that can fail and cause issues. Common problems inlude valve cover oil leaks (quite common), water pump issues, coolant leaks, vacuum pump failure (quite common), turbocharger wastegate rattle that occurs at high mileage and lastly, coil pack failure.
In the grand scheme of things, this isn't as scary as total engine failure but some maintenance checks are required.
Hope this helps.

Hello there,
We're sorry to hear that was your experience. However for many cars, depending on how they've been maintained also, at around that mileage would warrant an overhaul.
