Hi there!
This question depends on the model year in question, because the F20 118i wa available with two engines over its production life - and one is much better than the other.
If you're considering a 2016-on model with the 1.5-litre 3-cylinder, we'd say you could go ahead and get one, provided the car has a full dealership service record and no prior accidents. This version employs the new B38 engine, which is proving to be reliable on the whole, and you shouldn't expect any issues other than normal ageing BMW fare: prepare for some cooling system leaks and coolant pump replacement at some point, and be ready to replace the composite camshaft cover soon. Other than that, this is a solid power unit.
However, the earlier (pre-2016) F20 118i and 116i used the N13 ("Prince") engine, which was co-developed with Peugeot. In this earlier iteration (as used by BMW), this engine family is known for a litany of issues as they age, including timing chain/tensioner failure, injector failure, high-pressure fuel pump failure, and turbo troubles. We'd definitely give that one (or any BMW/MINI with this engine) a wide berth, simply because of its poor reputation and big potential for extreme repair costs.
Hope this helps!
