Bmw 320d (2012/2013) VS Audi A4 2.0 tdi (same years)

Hi,

I have a budget of 200k and 30k deposit. The issue is that I can't decide between the two cars mentioned above in terms of reliability and overall running costs in a long run. Can you advise which might be a better option?

I'm looking for an automatic.

Hi there

If you have your heart set on either one of these two cars and want an automatic, we'd recommend the BMW 320d as the superior choice. The reason is simple, and revolves around the Audi's MultiTronic CVT drivetrain: those are known to present problems with age, and are very expensive to repair. In contrast, the BMW will need frequent attention for coolant leaks and drive belt pulleys, but at least its automatic gearbox is much less trouble-prone than the Audi's CVT... Alternatively, you could also consider a Mercedes C220 CDI/BlueTec, which is likely to present the fewest long-term maintenance issues amoung its peers.

If we're talking about the manual derivatives, the A4 should end up being less troublesome in the long run, with the Audi's clutch assembly appearing to be more resistant to general-use wear and tear than the BMW's. Their engines are roughly equal in terms of durability (very good) and efficiency, but the Audi's wider power band will make it nicer to live with in traffic.

The verdict also favours the Audi on parts availability, because it shares many mechanical bits with other VW group cars, and has stronger aftermarket support in terms of OEM-level but non-original parts and maintenance experts. However, bear in mind that they are both complex machines with a lot of small things that could go wrong - and neither one is particularly easy to work on.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. My issue with C class on that generation has a bit of an old man look to it. Especially the interior, I don't like it very much.

Follow up, would you say the audi might be more reliable or pose less maintenance issues than the BMW if go with the manual?
