Those claims regarding the 320i's engine being less reliable mainly relates to the pre-2015 models, which still used the old N20 engine. Beginning in 2015, the 320i moved over to the new B48 engine, which has a good reliability record thus far. Of course, it's likely to suffer the same issues as many other BMW engines (oil- and cooling system leaks), but the basic mechanical bits of the newer "B-family" engines appear to be quite robust as far as the current evidence shows.
So, in your case, we'd prefer the 2016-model 320i over the 2014-model 320d, except if you regularly cover long distances (in which case the diesel's superb fuel economy will make it the winner).
