Hello there
Your budget places some serious limitations on the list of suitable cars, but there are some appealing choices nonetheless.
Searching AutoTrader's listings, we selected diesel SUVs with manual transmissions as main criteria, and then filtered the prices from low to high. (Manual gearboxes, because long-distance travel means less city traffic, and there are benefits to fuel efficiency as well. The same applies to turbodiesels, which drink a lot less on the open road; and SUVs, because they're suitable for poor road conditions as well as comfortable freeway cruising.)
Some options stood out:
Nissan Qashqai 2.0dCi (first-generation): These vehicles have well=proven mechanical bits, are comfortable and economical, and can now be had within your budget range. Their mileages will be on the high side, however, but that shouldn't be too much of a concern if the vehicle has been well-maintained.
Renault Duster 1.5 dCi (first-generation): The same reasons apply as does to the Nissan - proven mechanicals, rugged build, and excellent fuel efficiency.
Ford EcoSport petrol or diesel: If you don't need to carry large cargo, the EcoSport will also serve you well. Available with petrol- or diesel power, the EcoSport will be capable enough on the open road, frugal enough to run well without needing major attention, and relatively affordable to maintain.
Hope this helps!
