Hi there
One thing we can say without reservation is that the 2018 (current-generation) Yaris is rock-solid as far as durability goes, and its service spares prices aren't excessive (even from the agents). It's also much more conservative on the mechanical front than the Polo, which means that there isn't a turbo or direct injection system to cause headaches a few years down the line.
The best bit is that this Yaris is the one Toyota on our market that depreciates quite steeply, so there are some great deals to be found in the used market. A two-year-old Yaris is basically just run in, and there are many of them listed at very reasonable prices. If you buy a cheap new-ish used one now and plan to keep it for a long time, it will most likely be worth more than other cars in its price bracket as it ages, simply because it will still be running and reliable (whereas others won't).
The other upshot is that there's very little risk attached to buying a Yaris - it's also not very popular among car thieves, so insurance will be reasonable. In short, you can't really make a mistake buying a 2018-on Yaris. We'd recommend a manual gearbox, though, as the CVT isn't very nice to live with...
Hope this helps!
