Hi there
According to our research, it would appear that the 1.5T EcoBoost engine in the Focus is quite reliable and without any serious inherent design flaws - it's also not prone to overheating in the way of the older 1.6T engine. The only hassle we've picked up relates to a possible turbo/exhaust rattle but that problem is still being traced, with Ford maintaining that it's not actually a problem, but an exhaust resonance. It does however not appear to impede the car's drivability or longevity. The rest of the car also has a solid reputation, although some electrical issues may appear with time.
However, it will still present the same long-term issues as any other direct-injection petrol engine, with carbon fouling of the intake ports and attendant emissions control equipment bound to rear their heads at some stage in the future. We'd recommend you also invest in a comprehensive breakdown insurance plan (can be financed with the car) to be sure you're covered for possible future problems. Also have the car checked out properly by an independent third party inspection service, such as DEKRA or the AA, to ensure that there's no sign of prior accident damage or impending mechanical maladies.
And whatever you do, avoid any car with the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox - those transmission are at the centre of a world-wide controversy, so you really don't want to get caught up in that drama...
Hope this helps!
