Hi there
There's very little to choose between these two cars in the criteria you mention, with the possible exception of fuel efficiency. The Audi 1.4 TFSI delivers spectacular real-world fuel consumption, but in the hands of a conservative driver, the latest A200 (available in 2018 already) is even more frugal. Resale value of both will be disappointing after a few years, because premium brands suffer disproportionately from the effects of depreciation. Over a period of 3/4 years, they will likely retain similar percentages of their value, but it does seem as though the A3 retains its value slightly better (if still poorly). Again, insurance costs should be similar.
The Audi does have the upper hand in practical measures as well: it rides more smoothly, and its larger glass area means that it's easier to see out of - an important consideration for town driving. As far as finance goes, it's wise to put down as large a deposit as possible and pay it off as quickly as possible (if your finance agreement allows it). This way, you'll reduce the interest load on top of the debt, meaning more money in your pocket in a few years' time.
Hope this helps!
