Hi there
The last Volkswagen Golf 6 GTI's arrived in South Africa in 2013, and among those are the Edition 35 cars. That would really be the one to go for, and we see that they list around the R300 000 mark. For that money, you get a true limited-edition car with extra power, nicer lights, and some interior upgrades. And, because they will become collector's items in a few years, the Edition 35s on offer generally have low mileage - between 40 000 and 100 000 km. You can get a non-Ed35 GTI as well, and those are usually a bit less expensive, with similar mileage.
They are decent cars without significant design flaws, but they do need quite stringent maintenance. So, before you buy one, check that it has a full service history from the agents (Volkswagen), and that all the scheduled maintenance on the DSG gearbox and engine has been completed. as needed. This is very important, because negligent maintenance on these cars will come back at a later stage as a breakdown, which will cost you a lot of money. It's also wise to have the car checked out at a reputable testing centre such as Dekra, to make sure that there's no sign of accident damage or other looming issues.
Hope this helps!
