Hi there
This is a bit of a murky area, as there are no hard and fast rules as to what constitutes a high-performance car. Insurance companies tend to view the sportiest variants of a range as high performance derivatives, which means that (for example) a BMW M5 is seen as high performance, while the only-slightly-slower 550i is seen as a normal variant. It also depends to a large extent on a car's subjective reputation: even though a Toyota GT86 is quite slow in modern terms, it's still seen as a high performance car by some insurers.
It would be quite interesting to know exactly what the reasoning is, but that secret will probably forever be buried in the secret chambers of those insurance houses...
Hope this helps!
