When you apply for car insurance,who or what is insured?

Most of the questions asked when one applies for car insurance are about you as the driver. The only ones relating to the vehicle itself are its make,model and year of manufacture.
Therefore I firmly believe that the insured in this case is you the driver, and you should be able to drive any other vehicle that is not insured as the premium you pay depends on your personal driving history.
Furthermore, if you own more than 1 vehicle you should not need to have insurance on these additional vehicles if you are the regular driver.
Am I alone in thinking like this?
