Hi there
If you are referring to the previous-generation A4 (known as the B8 generation), you;ll need to be very careful. Owners have reported an unusually high incidence of engine trouble - usually related to premature bore wear, which would necessitate an engine rebuild to rectify. Furthermore, you really should avoid anything with a MultiTronic transmission, as those are also known to be trouble-prone in the long term.
However, if you do find an A4 1.8T or 2.0T with more than 100 000 km on the clock, yet with a clean bill of health from an independent inspection centre (such as Dekra), it will be one of the good one, and you could likely buy it without worry. These issues usually show up between 80 000 km and 120 000 km, and have in many cases already been rectified. Always check a car's service- and maintenance history: if anything in there makes you suspicious, walk away and look at the next car.
Hope this helps!
