Hello there!
Welcome to the journey of buying your first car, we hope you will have a lot of fun in choosing and driving your new pride and joy! We wouldn't recommend an older C-Class or 3-Series (or an A4) at this price point, as they are generally showing very high mileages, will be at the end of the maintenance plans, and will definitely cost you a lot to maintain because of this. However, there are some other enticing options, which will genuinely suit your needs better than an old 320i or C180.
Your choices are only limited by your budget, really - but seeing as you're a first-time buyer, you probably don't need to go for a high-end car right from the outset. So let's work on your budget cap of R250 000. It also shouldn't be too big and difficult to drive, with reasonable fuel economy, and if possible, a maintenance plan for carefree motoring. Let's assume a mileage cap of 50 000 km as well. At this price point, you have a choice of many worthy sedans, but we'd recommend one of the following:
Audi A3 1.4T S-Tronic - you can get one of these beauties with less than 50 000 km for around R230 000.
Mazda3 2.0 Astina Auto - a very underrated, stylish sedan with great reliability, equipment and luxury, for less than R250 000.
Volvo S60 - there are plenty of these around. They're really good-looking, well-equipped and safe - and not expensive either. They will also have some maintenance plan life left at this price, so long-term expenses shouldn't be a worry.
Suzuki Ciaz 1.4 GLX AT - a real bargain. You can get a nearly-new one with all the bells and whistles for less than R230 000. It's handsome, practical, extremely frugal and easy to drive, and you won't find one on every corner.
Kia Cerato - these handsome cars are also great value. You can find a low-mileage, late model car well within our price cap.
This is just a short list of stylish possibilities but please take a look around AutoTrader to see if there's something else which catches your eye.
Hope this helps!
