Hello there
With a family of 6, of which 4 are children, you will need a lot of space for luggage and all the stuff kids seem to accumulate as they go along. The younger ones will likely need to use booster seats as well, meaning that you will need easy access to get them strapped in. In addition, you need something with at least some dirt-road abilities, which effectively rules out most of the South African-market MPVs (they're much too low to venture too far off tar).
Now you didn't mention your budget, but it's likely that you will need to spend at least R400 000 to get a vehicle with the rugged build, space, and safety credentials you require for a family transporter. This will leave you with the usual SUV line-up of Fortuner/Everest/TrailBlazer/Pajero Sport, all of which can be had with low mileage in that price range. They're all good vehicles, and will all serve you well.
But how about thinking outside the box? You can also take a look at a big-body Mitusbishi Pajero, which retails new around the R650 000 mark, but can be had pre-owned around the R400 000 mark as well. It will give you a virtually indestructible 3.2 turbo diesel with enough power to haul big loads, plenty of cabin space for the kids, and genuine off-road abilities. They're also very comfortable, economical to run, and with proven durability as well. That's where the smart money would go. And as a bonus, you will have a genuine rally-bred legend with a dash of individualism. Those who drive them, love them...
Hope this helps!
