Hello there!
When a carburettor-equipped car hesitates or jerks during acceleration, it often points towards a problem with the carburettor itself - usually a blocked jet or a torn accelerator pump diaphragm. In addition, these Toyota 2E engines are known to be very sensitive to carburettor jetting and adjustment, so if something is even a little out of specification, it could easily lead to your jerking symptom. Lastly, these symptoms could also point towards an air leak on the intake manifold. If any of these problems exist, and if you're not quite comfortable stripping and repairing a carburettor or looking for an air leak (which very, very few people are), you will have to get it checked out by a carburettor expert.
But before you attend to the carburettor, there are some other checks you could perform yourself. Your car is quite old, so the chances are that the ignition system isn't in top condition anymore. If this is the case, a set of new plug leads, a new ignition coil and a set of spark plugs may just solve the problem. You can do this yourself, using very simple tools. Again, if you're not comfortable with working on your own car, you should ask a reputable workshop to investigate the health of your car's ignition system.
Hope this helps!
