Hi there!
The RAV4 is a very good car, and even when new, it represents pretty good value. If you want an automatic variant, we would recommend a diesel in VX trim - it comes with AWD, and the diesel pairs well with the automatic gearbox. The petrol auto uses a CVT (Constantly Variable Transmission), which is significantly less pleasant to use.
Other car which should be on your shortlist: You might want to look at the Hyundai Tucson as well, and the Kia Sportage is also a good car at a reasonable price, especially in the second-hand market. And there's an unsung hero you might enjoy as well: the Chevy Captiva with its potent yet frugal diesel engine and smooth automatic gearbox can be had for a song, now that Chevrolet has left SA. Don't let that fact bother you too much, as parts will be available for at least the next decade.
Hope this helps!
