Some rules to consider when looking to purchase a used vehicle:

  1. Do your homework
Decide based on your needs and pocket not just your dreams. Use any of the comprehensive vehicle guides to check prices. Remember Auto Trader will give you a good idea of what 'the market' is asking. Also, take a look at our popular “what it’s worth” section. Consider insurance, servicing, economy and depreciation when setting a budget for yourself. Know your facts before you start looking. Research used vehicle values on the site and also by visiting local dealers in your area. Understand what value added equipment each used vehicle model has and how this may affect the price.
  2. The search
Time is money so keep your shopping list short. Use your phone or e-mail but don't expect to discuss deals. Ask about the vehicle's mileage, age, condition, service history, and specification. Draw up a short list and make appointments to take the used vehicle on a test drive.
  3. Inspecting the goods
Make a thorough inspection or employ a professional. Once faults are discovered, use them as leverage to negotiate a better price. Should you be satisfied with the current condition and after doing your homework, spend at least 20 minutes test-driving the vehicle, looking out for any faults and ensuring that you are completely comfortable with it. Make sure that you check all the equipment, and electrically powered items. Ensure that the used vehicle you are interested in has a FSH (Full service history).

Check for excessive exhaust smoke in older vehicles, and listen for suspicious knocks and rattles. Drive more than one vehicle before you buy so that you have a benchmark against which to evaluate your test-drive.
  4. Checking the documents
Establishing identity is crucial, particularly when buying privately. Make sure the registration documents have the correct seller's name and address. Check the service history with care. Compare receipts and the roadworthy certificate with the actual mileage of the vehicle.
  5. Striking the deal
Negotiation is an art that can save you money. The only way to come out on top is to stay cool, be aware and remain polite. Never feel pressured into closing the deal, remember the buyer has the advantage, and if you are not completely satisfied with the vehicle, you are not obliged to purchase it and should rather look elsewhere until you find one that completely satisfies your needs.
  6. Dealing with the money
There are a number of ways to finance the purchase of your used vehicle, so find the method that suits you best. Remember to get a receipt, which also needs to state that the vehicle is free of any outstanding encumbrance and to sign the Change Of Ownership document. You keep half, the other goes to the seller.
  7. Assessing a warranty
Some warranties are great, others are useless. There's no shortcut and just one golden rule - read and understand the fine print. Never take anything for granted. If you are unsure, make sure you get the person to explain and explain again until you are completely satisfied.
