New BMW 5 Series: first details

The new BMW 5 Series has been unveiled in Germany. Its revised looks include curvier lines, an inclined kidney front-grille and what BMW describes as a "graceful, coupe-like roofline".

It boasts a range of seven new engines: four petrol, two diesels and one turbodiesel.

The BMW 535i delivers 306bhp, while the 523i and 528i deliver 204bhp and 258bhp respectively.

The 525d and turbodiesel 530d 5 Series produce 204bhp and 245bhp, while the entry-level 520d delivers 184bhp and can achieve 56.5mpg.

The fuel-efficient 520d can also accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and reach a maximum speed of 141mph. It emits 132g/km of CO2.

The petrol BMW 550i is the most powerful 5 Series, with a power output of 407bhp. This can go from 0-62mph in 5 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph. For more details read BMW 5 Series: specifications.

BMW also claims the new 5 Series has the longest wheelbase in its class, with a distance of 2,970mm between the front and back wheels - which should mean good rear legroom.

Dynamic Driving Control will be available as an option, which allows the driver to alter the suspension.

All new BMW 5 Series models can include a new eight-speed automatic gearbox as an extra, which comes as standard with the BMW 550i.

Other features as standard across the entire range include Brake Energy Regeneration, a fuel-efficient gearshift point indicator and air-conditioning.

BMW has added lightweight doors, front side panels and suspension components made out of aluminium to keep weight low. ConnectedDrive systems include parking sensors, collission detection with auto-braking, cruise control, speed limiter and auto stop/start.

The sixth-generation BMW 5 Series is likely to go on sale in the UK from April 2010, a few weeks after its German launch on March 20.
